The 4.4 kernel is very old and there have been a lot of changes to modesetting,
especially for DP-MST.

What you could try is force CRTC assignments:
xrandr --output eDP1 --crtc 0 --output DP-1-1 --crtc 1 --output DP-1-2 --crtc 2

Could you try the above and test what happens?
