This happenned to me while using chromium in gnome-shell running in wayland
mode.

I have a dell XPS 15 9560 with kaby lake intel graphics. There is one internal
monitor, one external monitor connected via a USB-C --> displayport adapter,
and another connected via HDMI.

The screen froze twice for about a minute and then everything started working
again.
