This may also be relevant - a bug report for the crashes of gnome-shell I
experience before the hang: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=789501

This hang does not occur in a console - it only happens if gnome-shell is
running in Wayland (I haven't tested other configurations / compositors etc).

Apparently the kernel is reporting invalid information about which displays are
connected as soon as the monitor is unplugged.
