I added the one-liner from b651bd2a3ae33f6a98d6ea36ef2518f5211bdc4f to both
4.16-rc7 and 4.16 (both of which showed the issue), and not quite as impressive
as 25000 passes but booting between the 2 modded kernels with this patch and
issuing 936 sleep events over the weekend, all came back successfully with hdmi
audio!

So, I'm happy to call it cased closed here :)
