Actually Intel may have been "correctly" following the DP spec. VESA probably
wanted to replace HDMI in the "AV world" so it made sure that it behaves the
same as HDMI on CEA modes.

It's just in reality it never made and will never make it (the bosses in the
"AV world" will never let DP get on the AMPs or so, because of the patents in
HDMI they hold or stuff like that, money/benefits you know), and sadly some
vendors ignore that silly part of the spec (which deserves to be ignored
though).

As you have mentioned, the really awful part is that Intel implements the
attribute in kernel which can only be changed via X. But honestly why would I
be surprised? It's i915.

TL;DR, Never buy monitors with both DP and CEA mode as optimal but without
color range setting. Try your best to avoid Intel iGPU. (It's not like Intel
consider it not okay to sell you broken CPU without recalling it.)

P.S. Does it hurt (for me) to reopen it?
