Hmm, first thought is whether the earlier fail could have bobby trapped the
subsequent driver init. Quite scary in its own right, but that's the only lead
here as because of that earlier hang we also lost the tracek buffer.

If there's a better debug example, that may help jog my memory as to what it
was ;)
