How to try try then 4.17 upstream kernel on Ubuntu 18.04 without damaging the
system? Could you refer me to a detailed guide?

It seems I have the following mesa:

$ apt show libegl-mesa0 
Package: libegl-mesa0
Version: 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1

How can I update it without damaging my system?
