The datasheet confirms the LSPCON can be configured to a testing and debugging
mode using pull ups and pull downs on the chip's bootstrap pins. I have no
information on what that mode entails, but it's plausible a fake display is
part of it. This seems like the most plausible explanation to me at this point.

I don't know if this can be configured in the BIOS, or perhaps jumpers on the
motherboard, or something else. But if I'm right, it doesn't look like an i915
driver issue to me.

We can keep the bug open for tracking purposes for now, but I think this will
be RESOLVED NOTOURBUG.
