With GDM turning on the screen didn’t bring it back up, and the message below
could be seen in the logs.

    [Tue Sep 18 09:40:10 2018] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]]
*ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

Unplugging and plugging the display again fixed the issue.
