I now understand the UEFI image is intended, and not related to the main issue
(old behaviour can be restored with fbcon=nodefer).

Main issue (black screen/flickering) still exists on 5.0.0-rc2 if no extra boot
options are provided.

Adding i915.fastboot=1 fixes the problem. Not clear how to isolate the issue
further.
