Wild idea, is it a fancy new display? Maybe it's Multi-SST. Please ensure
CONFIG_DRM_DP_AUX_CHARDEV=y and /sys/class/drm/card0-eDP-1 actually has
drm_dp_aux0, adjust the dev name accordingly, and run:

# dd if=/dev/drm_dp_aux0 skip=1956 bs=1 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Is the result non-zero?

Most likely it's zero, but this should rule out one potential source of issues.
