I've been using it today without seeing the usual black screen problem.

I put some tracing in an earlier version of the result of trying to get the HPD
status. It shows that it either succeeds immediately, or times out after 90ms.
I find that a bit bizarre; I think I don't really understand what the calling
code is doing with this function.</pre>
