I think I'm seeing something very similar.
This is an Intel NUC5PPYH running Arch Linux x86-64; connected through VGA to a
(powered-off) monitor at a custom resolution of 1024x600 @60Hz. Because of
unrelated problems, the system isn't really doing anything interesting yet,
most of the crashes happened while only a Mate Terminal and Mozilla Thunderbird
were running under X/Mate/LightDM. I could still access the system through ssh,
but not over VNC (x11vnc service hung, together with X); and the physical
screen and keyboard were unresponsive.
It had been running stably for about two months, until a system upgrade a week
or so ago; since then these crashes have occurred several times, mostly after a
couple of hours of the system sitting idle. I ran pacman -Syu again last night,
and the most recent crash was this afternoon, so I assume the most recent
version is still affected.
As far as I can tell from the pkg cache, linux-4.4.1 up to 4.5.4 were stable
for me as well, and 4.6.1 (last week) and 4.6.2 (this week) both show the
crashes.
