I'm getting the same error with a GM965/GL960 controller, too.
On kernel 4.8.0-2-amd64 and 4.9.0-1-amd64 this results in a kernel freeze
during the boot process. Found a "vblank wait timed out on crtc 0" with a
following "Call Trace" in an old kern.log with a 4.7.0-1-amd64, too but during
that time that doesn't result in a kernel freeze.
Hardware:
Acer Extensa 5220
Architecture:
X86_64
Kernel:
4.7.0-1-amd64
4.8.0-2-amd64
4.9.0-1-amd64
Distribution:
Debian testing/sid
Workaround to skip the freeze during the boot process:
Boot kernel in recovery mode and skip root login with Ctrl+D
