Symptoms, screen flashes non-stop logging in X server until this error happens,
then problem appears to go away and updates are stable. Is there some sort of
reset that happens after this event?

transcoder A FIFO underrun
After this happens the display stabilizes. Until then it's a flickering
resizing mess.
