I'm running 4.14.15 very close to upstream (gentoo-sources).  I tested with
your nvme_core option on the kernel command line and reproduced the issue
(verified it was disabled via 'nvme get-feature -f 0x0c -H /dev/nvme0 | grep
APSTE'.   So that's not a workaround.

Right now I'm booted with rc6 disabled to verify that 'fixes' it.</pre>
