Through trial & error, I SOLVED by turning OFF "fastboot" (was on) for i915 (I have Intel integrated graphics (ironlake)) in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and /etc/default/grub, updated the initramfs & grub. It seems that fastboot is unable to detect the laptop panel's mode.
