I use 4.14 now and there are no hangs. I don't know what version fixed it but I guess it was fixed by 4c01ded5732d6533a2858fae30c197f734745062 "drm/i915: Use atomic page flip for intel again" in 4.12. The bug likely still exists in kernel 4.4 and 4.9 (I haven't tested in a while) and they are supported up until year 2023.
