We had a chance to talk about this today. My patch was definitely
broken, but the current structure of the 2D driver makes it difficult to
do a correct fix.

I plan to spend next week reworking the 2D driver so that this change,
(and other changes I have planned), become much simpler to implement,
and much more likely to be correct.

Good performance for 965 is really close---I can feel it! :-)
