I have tested the new driver using mplayer (tried various outputs on both 
smaller-than-screen and larger-than-screen videos, in windowed and 
full-screen modes), glxgears, compiz, and finally decided to test for 
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15187 (which still exists). 
Since bug 15187 is not reproducible with kdm without running xrandr first, I 
ran xrandr without parameters. The picture immediately became unusable 
(scrolling rapidly in the diagonal direction and weirdly magnified). However, 
I cannot reproduce this new bug about the scrolling picture again - so let's 
pretend that it doesn't exist until I hit it again and find a way to 
reproduce reliably.
