Of course you are a better specialist, but I don't see how this theory
explains the fact that only the version of xf86-video-intel changed
between the working and non-working 3D setup in Debian Lenny. Could
you please explain the interaction in more detail or post a link to
this explanation?
Working: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12lenny2, libgl1-mesa-dri
7.0.3~rc2-1, xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.0-2
Non-working (indirect rendering + severe flickering):
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12lenny2, libgl1-mesa-dri
7.0.3~rc2-1, self-compiled xf86-video-intel 2.2.99.901
