Sounds like the system isn't passing DDC along, a fairly common issue.
Turn on ModeDebug in your xorg.conf file and post that to a bugzilla
entry should let someone check that case.

There are recent patches posted to xorg@ and intel-gfx@ which add HDMI
audio support to the X server and driver.
