I've backported the glyph cache on top of 1.5.3. Just grab the 
"server-1.5-branch" at this url.

So far, it seems to work with all drivers (radeon users didn't seem to 
notice any bugs)

That's the branch I'm planning to push to Gentoo unstable within the 
next few days/weeks.

I'd definitely be interested in any feedback :)
