It Works for Me (tm). Infortunately the only other tester (865) seems to
be busy/offline so I don't know whether my last round of fixes solved all
remaining problems. But Eric has to decide whether my design is the Right
Thing first, 'cause we haven't yet reached full consensus on this stuff.

Contains cumulative patches against ddx and kernel, for easier patching.
The kernel patch doesn't contain the performance work I did last week
(patches 5-8 of my last submission). If you want, I can send you a
complete patch.
