I've misread your dmesg, there's actually nothing wrong with the backlight
settings that the i915 driver does. One thing to figure out is which
backlight controller actually controls your backlight. Can you check out
all the exposed controls in /sys/class/backlight and experiment around
which ones have an effect?
I'm pretty sure that it's the backlight and not a modeset gone wrong,
since We don't do another modeset when X starts (it takes over the current
setup).
