There is a confirmed memory corruption here, should be:
shmem_read(engine->default_state, SKIP_SIZE, ptr + SKIP_SIZE, real_size - SKIP_SIZE);
Also a bit of nit but I think s/SKIP_SIZE/GOLDEN_CONTEXT_SKIP_SIZE/g
