That is correct. The hardware implementation is read-only.

The right-most column of the numbers are aligned. You are seeing the value
for SF_TIME offset to the right because tabs were used, the introductory
"+" shifted the tab stop one to the right, and the previous alignment was
on the tab stop.

Yes. I wanted to have a function to do the read plus the scaling. Macro
le_32_get_bits() requires that its field_mask arg be a compile-time constant.
(This is so it can compute the field's bit shift at compile time).
Using le_32_get_bits() inside the function would require that function arg
field_mask be a compile-time constant inside the function. This would only be
the case (given gcc's actual behavior) if the function is inline. The only
way to guarantee that the function is always inline is to use __always_inline.
Indeed, that was the original implementation.
A reviewer comment about the __always_inline caused me to re-examine this.
I concluded that using __always_inline for this purpose (and depending on
gcc's ill-defined but empirically observed behavior) was too much of a hack.
Accordingly, the function now computes the field bit shift (using the
compile-time constant definition of the field_mask) at the caller site and
also passes that as an arg to the function.

Yes, that is the new standard. See Documentation/filesystems/sysfs.rst .
