No, there's no other option. There used to be a freetype2+fontconfig
backend, but it was basically the same as pango so I removed it.

All font renderers on linux use font-config, as far as I know. It's a
bit under-documented and weird, but it works. So usually, if one looks
around enough, you find some HOWTOs that describe what you want to do.
Just like in your case now.
