Not a lot more information...

can_service@liteonit.com does not seem to respond to emails
the "problem report" form on the lite-on web page is broken, and has been
for days.

I posted on their public forum, and received response from a couple of
other users with similar problems.

I took the 2nd drive back to the store I bought it from, and they told me
that linux burns out these drives, that they've had people bring back as
many as 10 drives, and that the manufacturer won't warranty them under
this situation.  (I think he heard about mandrake + LG and thinks that
applies to all versions of linux and all drives).  They refused to give me
store credit, and gave me a 3rd ltr-52327s drive.  They have told me that
they will not replace the drive again.

And just when I thought there would be no happy ending, I received an
email from liteon's us service department, assuring me that failing drives
will be replaced. :)

Hopefully I won't have to do that again though. :)
