If you simply remove the first set_mode() call, it will stay in whatever
mode it found when reading the EDID data from your monitor/display. However,
if that operation failed for some reason, there will be no mode selected by
default. Use the get_mode() call to see if there's a default mode set up and
only do the set_mode() if not.
