Finally, I could get it to (sort of) work using the "Dual X setup", as
described here:

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/DisplayLink#Two_X_server

This gives me two basically independent displays, with a mouse that can
traverse.
Less than ideal, but better than nothing.

If anybody has any idea how to make the xrandr-based method work (with
the udl module),
please drop me a line!
