That was indeed the problem - I have some things installed manually
from a source compile and others from my package system, and they
don't agree on library locations. I cleaned up the manually-installed
stuff and made a package that installs from the git tree (fortunately,
that's very easy in Arch) and that fixed things.

ModemManager connected just fine with MBIM. The logs are attached.
