Ok, I see what you mean.

The original "Create Profile" actually returns as output the "WDS
Profile Identifier" TLV, so the modem is in charge of selecting the
actual profile ID. This "WDS Profile Identifier" must be given as
input when modifying or deleting a profile.

Sierra's new method allows to select (and overwrite?) the specific
profile ID given as input.
