Thanks for the help too!

After I dealt with ModemManager as suggested by Alexander I could 
connect to ttyUSB2 and AT commands work.

I'm using a USB hub with an auxiliary 3A 5V power supply to make sure 
that the modem does not have power issues, so I should be OK there.
