A question.  Would there be any objection to announcing that we're pushing
the deadline back by, e.g., 7 days, then making a more concerted effort to
raise awareness in those days?

Announcing a CFP extension is a farily common tactic for free software
events -- though usually not announcing it until the last minute.  Helps
motivate all of those procrastinators and people whose day-jobs keep them
too busy....

To not slow things down, in the meantime the talk selection committee could
certainly begin vetting all of the extant submissions, I would think.
