Yeah I thought about this too. But let's not discuss about various
technical details on this mailing list (otherwise I could have discussed
for hours at yesterday's meeting). We'll deal with bugs and evolutions
of the format one at a time in dedicated tickets.

Not necessarily. The problem with TIFF is to be over-complicated. ORA
should not be, it will be simpler and well specified. We could still use
TIFF just for individual layers in a simple way (only for high bit
depth, not using advanced features).
Anyway not saying that we should use TIFF. Maybe other formats are
better suited. Just saying that the fact that a format itself has a lot
of features should not prevent us to use it for simpler needs.
But as I said, this is not the time to speak about these details. Sorry,
I let myself answer unexpectedly. :P
