Summary: Writer crashes when exporting a certain file to PDF
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: LibO 3.4.3 release
          Platform: x86-64 (AMD64)
        OS/Version: All
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: medium
         Component: Writer
        AssignedTo: libreoffice-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
        ReportedBy: julio.reis at tintazul.com.pt

Issue happens with LibreOffice 3.4.3 OOO340m1 (Build:302) under Mac OS X 10.7.1
(Lion).

I am writing my MSc thesis (arguably a complicated document in terms of
formatting). I used to be able to export to PDF, no problem. Today I tried
several times and LO crashed every single time.

The progress bar runs almost all the way to completion. About halfway through I
see text being shifted to another page—I see the same text always, but since
left and right margins are different in left and right pages, I see the text
jiggle to the right, then left—then by the time the progress bar is around 95%
LO crashes without any error message. I get the recovery box saying it's
crashed, would I like to restart etc.

(By the way, when I do restart my files recover nicely, but when I push
"Continue" to go to the bug-filing form, no form appears! I should submit
another bug report for that.)

I have tried the following approaches to see if they would solve the problem
(none of them did):

* Quitting LO and starting fresh, not from a recovery.

* Saving the document before exporting to PDF.

* Deleting the last table I'd inserted.

* Deleting the last image I'd inserted.

* Deleting cross-references to a footnote number—in that table I have a
footnote (number 5) but the footnote actually applies to three cells; so I had
put in a cross-reference to that footnote, so that footnote number 5 shows on
all three cells; all cells are on the same row and the same page, for that
matter. I tried deleting this because after the document was recovered, the
cross-references to the footnote indicated an error, "Reference not found" or
something. Weird. Anyway, it did no good.

* Deleting most of the text I've entered since the day before last, when I last
was able to export to PDF, and trying to export then.

* Removing the saved versions I had; I thought, "maybe the file is too big".

LO crashed on all such export attempts.

What I could do was: select all of the new text I'd entered since the last
successful export to PDF, paste it into a new document, and export it to PDF.
That export worked well. Of course it's no solution for my thesis, since I need
the formatting and the special page styles in the original document.

I then copied the file to my Ubuntu 11.04 box and I was able to export to PDF
without a single issue. The version there is LibreOffice 3.3.3 OOO330m19
(Build:301) tag libreoffice-3.3.3.1, Ubuntu package 1:3.3.3-1ubuntu2 — So the
problem is with the Mac.

(Of course I am not going to upgrade _that_ to LO 3.4 until I deliver the
thesis!)

I can attach the document, no problem—it's my thesis but I am going to release
it under Creative Commons, so I don't mind; the main problem is it's incomplete
right now, so I wouldn't exactly want it to be floating around in that state.

Help, please… help me, and help LO!

Anything else I can do to help detect what the problem was? I can try to help
next month after I've turned in the thesis. I also have a long list of wishlist
items (and a few bugs) to report then!
