In the current master branch (to be 3.6) this now works properly (under Fedora
16 x86_64).

Pasting data that doesn't max out the clipboard gets pasted without adding
extra columns.

Trying to paste data that did overflow (presumably) the clipboard shows a
dialogue stating "This contents of the clipboard could not be pasted".

The larger issue remains, but presumably this bug can be closed (if it proves
correct on other platforms too).
