Just for completeness
The issue seemed to be confined to the 3.4.x series of releases.
Problem occurred with openSUSE packages and the packages downloaded from
libreoffice.org.

The 3.5 series (32 and 64 bit)downloaded from libreoffice.org work beautifully.
openSUSE has not yet released 3.5 as stable.
