Please see my 3 attachments, "Default and styled bullet lists".

Saving as DOC, closing and reopening changes the bullet symbol, *ONLY* if the
bullet symbol is the default one. If you change the bullet symbol, then the new
symbol is preserved upon save as DOC, close and reopen.

Perhaps good to check whether the information about which bullet character to
use is being saved in the document, or if that information is not saved. Then,
upon reopen, LO would not be able to find the bullet character info and it
fills up by using that square character.

Created using LO 3.5.5.3 running over OSX 10.7.4.
