I can fully confirm the behaviour as reported by perkins at physics.ucsb.edu

OS WIN7/74 on Intel core i3 system.

LibreOffice 3.5.5.3 
Build ID: 7122e39-92ed229-498d286-15e43b4-d70da21

The erroneous input validation is not occuring ALWAYS when switching from
automatic to manually setting graph scale. Both X- and Y-axis manual scaling
are affected.

This behaviour seems to be generic and was also reported for Ubuntu systems.
