I issued another bug report on this issue, where we had a more detailed
discussion:

As you can see, the devs really aren't interested in resorting to the old
behavior on this issue.  I suspect this is because for some time Excel has done
it this way and the Libreoffice devs don't want to deviate from Excel's
behavior.  This design decision is really very unfortunate because it means
there is no longer any enhanced functionality of Libreoffice relative to Excel,
so the result is that I don't want to use either of them now, but when I do
have to do something in a spreadsheet, I just use Excel now because it's more
universal and the graphing features are easier to deal with.
