those are some good questions.

the page styles could be set up so that page-style-N has its
style:next-style-name attribute set to page-style-N+1.

but the problem with this idea is that the report builder would still need to
know how many pages there will be ("5 pages of detail"), which is not really
possible if it doesn't do its own page layout that is identical to Writer.

so it looks like the variables are the better approach after all.
