I couldn't reproduce both problems on Debian testing.
Version: 5.4.0.3
Build ID: 1:5.4.0-1

>From my memory, the copy/paste issue is mostly dependent on your x-window and
graphical environment. What environment are you using? (please also mention
Ubuntu version).

For me, it works fine on Debian testing with Mate (GNOME 2 fork).
