You can enable the automatic spellcheck via tools => Automatic Spell Checking.
If it doesn't work: What is your actual version? I use LO 5.3.4.2.

I change the bug to NEEDINFO. Please change it back to UNCONFIRMED, if you
still have this problem with an actual version.
