Spans and merged cells would be the "normal" way to do this manually, with the
other handling being autowrap of text meeting the bound, or autosize of column
width/height.

Adding logic to hide specific border (right or left) of otherwise rendered cell
grid seems rather a waste of time.

This falls into that category of trying to make a spreadsheet do layout feats
it is not intended to do.

To me--WONTFIX
