What do you mean "line height is squished"? Like, the lines overlap? The line
height is slightly smaller? Does it happen with fresh documents?
I had Cardo installed thanks to Google font pack and I don't see any difference
between 3.6 and 5.4.
Please include screenshots of before and after.
