No the workflow wouldnt be the same, as with MSO, the original image isnt
discarded until the document is closed. MSO will compress the image on save,
but the compressed image wont be shown in the document until the document is
reopened.

Our workflow will be that the image will be compressed once it is inserted, as
that will ensure the memory savings that we want to achieve.

DPIs lower than 96 result in very bad image quality, so i'd not give users the
option to set 50 and 75. DPIs above 300 arent useful for the automatic image
optimization that we are doing, as even a 4k image (~10 Mega pixels) gets
inserted at 573 DPI in writer.
