If you state that the font isnt present in the docx file, that definitely would
be part of the problem, but LO does correctly render the bullet character both
in the document and in the preview, so it is using some font to do so.

It was created with iwork pages on mac, as the filename mentions.

yes you are correct that if it is done with word 2010 then the dialog does work
correctly.
