"Microsoft Office formats": what do you mean? Which one? 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013
or 2016? None meet the OOXML standard.
It is a bad idea to save in MSO format by default because LO use ODF internally
and each save needs an conversion from ODF resulting in reduced performance and
possibly formatting loss.
I think a better workflow is to always work in ODF and save a copy in OOXML
only when you need to send the document to someone who need to edit it. If
editing is not needed, use the pdf format.
